Prof Geoffrey Blainey - Luncheon 26 August 2014

Professor Geoffrey Blainey has a long and distinguished career in academic circles. For twenty years he was a professor of economic history, and then Ernest Scott Professor of History at the University of Melbourne. He also held the chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University. In 1988 in New York, he received the International Britanica Award for excellence in the dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of humankind.

 

A member of various federal government committees, he was Chairman of the Australia Council for four years and Chairman of the Australia-China Council for five years. In 2001, he was Chairman for the National Council for the Centenary of Federation. In the early 1980s, he was Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at Harvard University.

 

As the author of many successful books, including A Short History of the World and The Tyranny of Distance, Professor Blainey had many stories to share with us at the August Tripe Club Luncheon.

Denis Baguley - CEO, Shrine of Remembrance

 

Following three years as the Project Manager for the Shrine's Stage One Visitor Centre redevelopment, Denis was appoint as CEO in July 2003. Prior to this, Denis spend over 20 years in both corporate and government roles, including the Director of Property & Commercial Development for the Department of Infrastructure. He has participated in many international study tours including the battlefields of Gallipoli and the Western Front, has walked the Kokoda Track and has seen Singapore's infamous Changi Prison.
